“Penacova à Mesa” presents dishes linked to riverside traditions

Between 1 and 9 March, the Municipality of Penacova is organising the gastronomic event “Penacova à Mesa”. The highlight will be dishes linked to riverside traditions, such as lamprey, shad and river fish. “These are delicacies that are part of our traditional cuisine and that obviously have a very strong connection to the Mondego and Alva rivers. In addition to all this, for dessert we propose conventual sweets that originated in the monastery of Lorvão, with the nevadas and pastéis de Lorvão being the best known”, highlights the mayor, Álvaro Coimbra, in a statement released today. Lamprey, which in times of great abundance would justify holding a gastronomic festival, is also part of this event – “we live in a different time, in which lamprey is going through a period of scarcity, not only in the Mondego basin, but in all Portuguese rivers. Our priority is to fight for the preservation of the species and the recovery of its habitat, but as we know how important it is for our restaurants, we decided to include it on the menu. However, given the scarcity, we recommend that you contact the restaurants in advance”, says mayor Álvaro Coimbra.
Fried or pickled river fish, fried shad and lamprey rice with turnip greens are the featured dishes at this event, which takes place over the first two weekends of March.
